WORLD RICE PRICES START TO DECREASE

On March 8, 2024, FAO announced the world food price index for February 2024 at 117.3. This number decreased by 0.7% compared to the previous month and decreased by 10.5% compared to the same period last year. This index is also much lower than the average food price index for 2022 – which is 144.7. That’s the result of falling prices for grains, including wheat and rice, and for vegetable oils. The monthly decline in rice prices occurred due to low demand for imported rice and the harvest just starting in some rice-producing countries.

In India, export rice prices this week fell from record highs as customers looked for other, cheaper sources of supply. 5% broken parboiled rice this week was offered at 548-555 USD/ton, down from 552-560 USD last week. India continues to restrict Basmati rice exports and maintain a 20% tax on Pratanak rice exports from August 2023. This week, Vietnamese rice prices increased slightly but are still much lower than the price at the beginning of the year. This week, Vietnam’s 5% broken rice was offered at 585 USD/ton, compared to 580 USD a week ago. Thai rice prices also decreased due to slowing demand for rice from other countries and currency devaluation. This week, Thailand’s 5% broken rice is offered at 615 USD/ton, compared to 620 USD/ton last week.
