VIETNAM LIFTS EXPORT RESTRICTIONS ON CANADIAN CEREALS

According to the industry association Cereals Canada, Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has removed creeping thistle (Cirsium arvense) from its quarantine pest list, this decision will take effect Sept. 29.

In 2018, Vietnam said it would place phytosanitary restrictions on wheat from countries where creeping thistle can be found. Canadian wheat exports to Vietnam in 2021 fell to just over 20,000 tonnes from over 200,000 tonnes annually before the restriction. Therefore, the decision to lift the restriction on creeping thistle will provide an expected boost to Canada’s grain export.

INDIA SETS MINIMUM EXPORT PRICE ON BASMATI RICE

In July, India banned exports of non-basmati white rice and on Aug. 25 imposed a 20% duty on exports of parboiled rice. This leads to the fact that some traders were classifying non-basmati white rice as basmati to avoid the export restriction. Therefore, India has set a $1,200-per-tonne minimum export price on basmati rice to help contain local prices. The government believes that the minimum export price will help ensure that non-basmati rice is not exported as basmati rice. India ships about 4 million tonnes of basmati rice to countries such as Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.
